Care & Treatment

If it bit you.

A bite from this species carries a specific set of risks. The timeline below tells you what to watch for and when to act.

The Single Most Important Thing

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is treatable with doxycycline, but it kills fast when missed. Fever within two weeks of a bite from this tick is an emergency until proven otherwise.

0–24 hours

Remove and clean.

RMSF transmission requires several hours of attachment. Prompt removal substantially lowers risk.

Remove and save
2–14 days

Fever and rash watch.

RMSF starts with sudden high fever, severe headache, and muscle pain. A spotted rash appears 2 to 5 days later, often starting on wrists and ankles.

ER if fever
5–10 days

Window for treatment.

Doxycycline started within five days of symptom onset dramatically reduces mortality. After day eight, the disease is often fatal even with treatment.

Demand testing
2+ weeks

Watch for paralysis.

Rare but real: an attached female can cause ascending paralysis from a toxin in saliva. Removing the tick reverses it within hours.
